Whitney’s compassionate yet no-bullshit approach is a powerful combination!
Rachel is the Senior Director of Experience & Design at AppDynamics, and is a volunteer UX Mentor for Backstage Capital. Previously, Rachel was UX Director at SAP Labs.
What was the moment you realized you needed support?
I got to a point where I felt I’d developed as much as I could without expert guidance. I’d been considering coaching for a while to understand where I could improve to be a more effective design leader, but I hadn’t identified a leadership coach or class that really appealed to me. I’m motivated to explore the intersections of mindfulness, creativity, ethical business, and design leadership; I had a tough time finding a company that spoke my language.
How did you decide Whitney’s coaching could be that support?
I knew Whitney by reputation as a UX thought leader, but I wasn’t aware she was a leadership coach until I met her at an event. As the keynote speaker, she described her powerful and humorous journey of self-discovery with honesty and vulnerability. Though she had clarity and didn’t pull any punches, Whitney was compassionate with herself. I appreciated her boundaries, her maturity, and her systematic approach grounded in mindfulness. I trusted I could bring my whole self to the relationship, and I trusted Whitney to be 100% honest with me. Her compassionate yet no-bullshit approach is a powerful combination!
What was the moment you noticed your habits were changing?
Pretty much immediately, Whitney helped me see habits and mindsets that were no longer serving me. The experience has been truly transformational & it’s hard to describe how great it’s felt having Whitney in my corner.
How has coaching changed your circumstances or perspective?
I’m in a new design leadership position with greater responsibility, shaping a human-centered design practice that’s 100% aligned to my values. I’m 10x clearer about what I want to do (and not do), how I want to show up, and the kind of culture and practice I’m motivated to build & support.
Thank you so much, Rachel, for your kind words and reflections on our coaching engagement. My utmost gratitude to you!
