In early January I wrote an article for Mashable titled “10 Most Common Misconceptions About User Experience Design” in which I asked 20 of the most prominent leaders in the user experience community what they think is the biggest misunderstanding about what we do. I was blown away by the response to the article — [Keep Reading…]
Photo of the day: Elevator button or fire alert?
Folks, this post marks a special occasion. My “Photo of the day” posts have become so famous that I’m starting to receive submissions — well, I got one, from a very nice friend. When I ran into Brian Shaler at SXSW, he told me that he had a great photo for me. He snapped it [Keep Reading…]
Twitter tweaks the homepage, again
A month ago I wrote about Twitter finally integrating Twitter Search into their homepage by adding a search box and the Top 10 Trends to the nav bar. Now it’s been redesigned yet again. The search box has been moved to the right sidebar, along with the trends listed out (instead of hiding in a [Keep Reading…]
Interviewed for “Facebook, Google, and the data design disaster”
Big thanks to Caroline McCarthy for interviewing me for her latest CNET article, “Facebook, Google, and the data design disaster” featured in her column The Social. Caroline asked me what I thought of the new Facebook homepage redesign, as well as Google’s apparent obsession with data (above good design, as exposed by designer Douglas Bowman [Keep Reading…]
Skitch beta 8 now available
If you follow me on Twitter or read this blog enough, you probably already know that I’m completely in love with Skitch. It’s by far the most common tool that I use for my everyday work — taking screenshots, making annotations, resizing images, etc. Skitch beta 8 was just released a couple days ago with [Keep Reading…]
Twitter.com finally removes their awful pagination
Twitter.com’s Newer and Older buttons at the bottom of the tweet stream are NO MORE! Just this morning when I refreshed the page, I noticed that they’ve been replaced by the lovely more button: When you press more, another 20 tweets appear right there on the page. Much easier to use — scrolling is not [Keep Reading…]
I’m Speaking at Pittsburgh Web Design Day
When I went to Pittsburgh in October for Carnegie Mellon Homecoming to see the reunion of my friend Joanna‘s band, I had the pleasure of finally meeting my Twitter pal G. Jason Head. Jason is a front-end web developer and runs Refresh Pittsburgh. He’s also putting together the first-ever Pittsburgh Web Design Day — “a [Keep Reading…]

You’ve all seen this before: tennis balls on a walker. In fact, Google walker tennis balls and you’ll get 329,000 results. The first three: How to Make a Walker Glide Most Easily, CWI Medical’s Walker Tennis Balls, and a blog post Tennis Balls and Walker, an Ultimate User Hack. Twitter finally integrates Twitter Search a.k.a. Summize
In July I mentioned that Twitter bought Summize, a search engine that indexes tweets, and redirected the site to http://search.twitter.com. Now finally, almost 8 months later, Twitter Search is fully integrated into the Twitter top nav. A search box is now globally accessible and the top 10 trending topics are displayed in a dropdown. In [Keep Reading…]
Photo of the day: Push to take toilet paper
I snapped this shot inside the spiffy public restroom at Madison Square Park. The restroom cleans itself after every use, a total water-and-soap spray-down of the entire space. So naturally, the toilet paper can’t be exposed — it would get soaked! Instead, it’s hidden behind a trap door. When you press the button, the metal [Keep Reading…]
