Tuesday morning I was sitting in the Amtrak waiting area at New York’s Penn Station when I glanced to my right to see if my track number had been announced. There were two screens, one stacked on top of the other, with two metal plaques that indicated Departures on the top and Arrivals on the [Keep Reading…]

Photo of the day: Dollars and Cents
On June 28, 2009, the New York City MTA increased the rates for subway and bus rides. Apparently the ticket agent who dutifully wrote this sign is unaware of the one-currency-symbol-per-value rule. Is the new fare 2.25 dollars or 2.25 cents? A smart, frugal person might have recourse to argue the latter.

NY Tech Meetup: European Edition gave 11 startups from all over Europe the chance to wow us tough New Yorkers with 3-minute demos of their webapps. Photo of the day: MAYDAY MAYDAY MAYDAY
It’s so comforting to know that in times of imminent danger, our stress call will require seven careful steps. I saw this sign posted on the Governors Island Ferry when heading back to Manhattan after a nice birthday picnic in the park. As I was capturing the shot I noticed something even more hilarious than the misspelling itself — looking closer I saw [Keep Reading…]
I am (more than?) a bunch of adjectives
I think like a lot of us, I have an incessant need to see myself reflected by others in order to believe that I am who I think I am. Positively and negatively. I save adjectives like souvenirs, reminders of when I got them and from whom. I wear them as badges, as armor. When [Keep Reading…]
Photo of the day: Floor seats
Back in May, I snapped this photo on my subway ride home one evening. I don’t think he saw me, but even if he did I doubt he would have cared. His nonchalance amused me on so many levels: He’s sitting on the floor of the subway car. That’s even too dirty for homeless people. [Keep Reading…]
Using Twitter for Friend Advice
I ask questions on Twitter all the time on a wide variety of topics, and I usually get really useful responses — but never as many as when I ask about interpersonal issues. A little while ago I posed this question: “What do you do when someone you really care about won’t respond to your [Keep Reading…]

I’ve published 447 blog posts over the past two years, but there are a few that really stick out in my mind. Some took a lot of research and analysis, some were important announcements, and others captured my wild emotions at pivotal moments in my personal and professional life. Below you’ll find a list of [Keep Reading…]
