Employees Must Wash Hands Before Returning to Work

I found this sign in a Starbucks bathroom. If you’re literate, do you really need detailed instructions on how to wash your hands?

1. Wet
2. Soap
3. Wash for 20 sec.
4. Rinse
5. Dry
6. Turn off water with paper towel

And just in case you can’t read or don’t understand the steps, there’s a little pictorial to show you the way. I love the graphic for Dry; those hands are moving furiously!

    I didn't know I should wait to turn off the water until I dry my hands. Interesting. I guess I can avoid the plague that way.

      I'm guessing it's so that you can use the paper towel to turn off the faucet.

    Haha, I've always wondered that myself. I guess better safe than sorry though, especially if you don't speak English and/or can't read. I saw a similar sign once illustrating (yes) how to urinate.

    It's a well-known restaurant fact that these signs are put up to reassure the patrons, not to encourage staff to wash their hands. I was at a diner recently and saw the waiter pick up a little container of cream cheese that had fallen face down on the floor and put it back on the plate before serving it to a customer. Hand-washing is the least of your dining worries.
