Starting in the Fall of 2009, the School of Visual Arts (SVA) in NYC will offer a Master of Fine Arts in Interaction Design.
As the program website states, “the MFA in Interaction Design program trains students to research, analyze, prototype, and design concepts in their business, social, and cultural contexts.”
The full-time two-year program is a dream. The chair is the ubiquitous Liz Danzico, the brains behind the operation. She has put together the most impressive faculty list I’ve ever seen. Jennifer Bove, Chris Fahey, Paul Ford, Jason Santa Maria, Khoi Vinh, Jeffrey Zeldman, and many more exceptionally talented practitioners.
Only 15 students will be accepted to the program each year, and classes will mostly be offered in the evenings to accommodate people’s full-time jobs. If I didn’t already have a Master’s degree in Human-Computer Interaction, I would jump at the chance to experience this. What an honor to learn from the best of the best of the best practicing in the field today.
Kudos to Liz for the incredible amount of work she must have put into organizing the MFA in Interaction Design. I’m not alone in being really impressed.
Master of Design in Interaction Design at Carnegie Mellon (my alma mater) is a phenomenal two-year program, and has produced some top people in the field — most notably Dan Saffer, principal of Kicker Studio, and author of Designing for Interaction and Designing Gestural Interfaces.
University of Washington offers an interaction design concentration in its MFA in Visual Communication Design and MFA in Industrial Design programs. The University of Baltimore’s school of Information Arts & Technologies offers a M.S. Interaction Design and Information Architecture (5 semesters), and the University of Kansas’s School of Fine Arts offers a M.A. Interaction Design (31 credit hours, not sure how much time that takes).
I think it’s safe to say that in the United States, there is no other program quite like the MFA Interaction Design that will be offered at the School of Visual Arts.
SVA is a special place. In 1970, my dad was in the very first graduating class of their photography program. At the time it wasn’t a degree-granting program; they only offered a certificate. Today it is one of the most treasured photography schools in the world. Imagine what it will be like in 2011 for a student to say that he or she was in the first ever graduating class of the MFA Interaction Design at SVA. Imagine how much SVA can do to change the way the world sees the practice of interaction design. I get teary just thinking about it.

“What an honor to learn from the best of the best of the best practicing in the field today.” Why would they only choose 15 persons? well maybe this is a good idea and a good training too if you are really interested in this field.
