One of my favorite songs popped up on Pandora tonight. Singing along as I have hundreds of times before, I heard something new in it for the first time. I now declare it The User Experience Designer’s Anthem. I’m convinced it was written for us.
A love letter to our users.
“Fix You” by Coldplay
When you try your best, but you don’t succeed
When you get what you want, but not what you need
When you feel so tired, but you can’t sleep
Stuck in reverse
And the tears come streaming down your face
When you lose something you can’t replace
When you love someone but it goes to waste
Could it be worse?
Lights will guide you home,
And ignite your bones,
And I will try to fix you
High up above or down below
When you’re too in love to let it go
But if you never try you’ll never know
Just what you’re worth
Lights will guide you home
And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you
Tears stream down your face
When you lose something you cannot replace
Tears stream down your face
And I
Tears stream down your face
I promise you I will learn from my mistakes
Tears stream down your face
And I
Lights will guide you home
And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you

Like it. Maybe a little too mellow dramatic, but very nice at any rate. By the way, I'm a new subscriber to your site and a fellow UX designer on the other side of the States. Howdy :)

Interesting post. I have just bookmarked this at stumbleupon. Others no doubt will like it like I did.

Does “you” refer to both the user and the artifact? August de los Reyes suggests imagining everything as living.

Ms. Hess, while we’re acknowledging sentiment, I must thank you. I haven’t stopped referring back to your “So you wanna” list since the day I discovered my passion. As meaningful as you’ve been to my life, I have modest feedback.
Please consider updating your HCI or design graduate programs list in about three years.
Thanks again.
