Whit Hour – Week 20
November 22, 2010, from 10:00-11:00pm ET
This Week’s Beer
No beer this week! (But I had a Blue Moon at dinner)
Questions Asked and (Hopefully) Answered
- how do you prefer to show transitions in documenting IA?
- hows the new job coming?
- What is your view or preference when it comes to working with local clients versus clients in other cities?
- How far is too far to push scoping deliverables with new clients. In particular when they don’t know/understand the full extent of what they need and what you as a UX consultant can offer.
- Going on my first UX interview tomorrow. Do you have any tips or things to avoid? I’m migrating from Visual Designer, Web Designer/Developer.
- Any advice you can offer on what profile person a young tech startup should hire to “own” all things UX?
- You tweeted a little while back “Being consumed by a startup is like being in a 24-hour orgy with your best friends: way too emotional to concentrate on how good it feels.” Can you speak a little more about that, and perhaps the difference between working with a startup/friends and working with larger/less personal/corporate clients?
- Are you obsessed with loosecubes or with the idea of cowkorking/shared working spaces? and loosecubes is just one facet of that?
- Any new UX books to add to the reading list?
- Have you ever picked a project because of the project itself, or has it always been the people behind it?
- What are your thoughts on how UX fits into design? There is some chatter about how UX is a given in a good design, not a separate part of it.
- How do you feel on the fact that people are STILL trying to make a distinction between UX/IA/.IxD/Whatever?
- Do you have any thoughts around the conept of Lean UX (possibly coined by janice fraser from LUXR)?
- I’m a freelancer UX (new!) and I’m wondering if you’ve outsourced.
- Can you talk about the role that storytelling, or a narrative may or may not play in the work you do?
- Do you find freelancing like dating too (like peope want more commitment)
- What do you think of Silverlight and Sketchflow for IxD?

Snook: What is your view or preference when it comes to working with local clients versus clients in other cities?
dafark8: How far is too far to push scoping deliverables with new clients. In particular when they don’t know/understand the full extent of what they need and what you as a UX consultant can offer.
dafark8: (starting in a very open ended position and trying to get an idea of where I am running towards but balancing pushing too hard and if its worth it)
Snook: (thanks)
bobpetrie: hey whit. long question for you … my partner and i have a launched a new consumer-facing tech startup
bobpetrie: we have a core team but feel we are missing something on the “design” front
bobpetrie: i feel we need a resource that has a ton of different capabilities all in one person – IA, UI, UX, designer, front end developer
bobpetrie: any advice you can offer on what profile person a young tech startup should hire to “own” all things UX?
dafark8: you said it much more eloquently than me
RodrigoSanchez: Going on my first UX interview tomorrow do you have any tips or things to avoid. I’m migrating from Visual Designer, Web Designer/Developer.
dafark8: it does. thanks,
jnymck: You tweeted a little while back “Being consumed by a startup is like being in a 24-hour orgy with your best friends: way too emotional to concentrate on how good it feels”
jnymck: can you speak a little more about that, and perhaps the difference between working with a startup/friends and working with larger/less personal/corporate clients?
efortiz: FYI – I love your blonde hair :)
syktek: oh hey
RodrigoSanchez: thanks
whitneyhess mod: http://uxmatters.com/mt/archives/2009/10/process-not-portfolio.php
bobpetrie: startups rock
crestfallen: are you obsessed with loosecubes or with the idea of cowkorking/shared working spaces? and loosecubes is just one facet of that?
jnymck: (thanks)
crestfallen: Sweet. That’s awesome. Thought I’d ask since I hear you talk about coworking and @nwc stuff a lot :)
efortiz: UX related, or anything?
syktek: did i miss the beer of the night? :x
efortiz: me? Never.
efortiz: awwww
efortiz: voyeurs

lwcavallucci: Eduardo, you are crazy dude!
efortiz: I’ll settle for anything blonde
jnymck: red strawberries
efortiz: hah
crestfallen: haha
dafark8: does look lighter today than usual
efortiz: Love you Lori :)
crestfallen: sweet lighting
Joshua: Ever mixed ketchup and mustard?
lwcavallucci: Love you too Eduardo!
efortiz: Me too. You do NOT have red hair, you have BLONDE hair
dafark8: i’m a UX designer with IxD and wireframing and
dafark8: is that the same conversation?
efortiz: I say we do something special
ebrownco: real red not fake red (bottle)

efortiz: Ok, everyone that wants Whitney to sing
syktek: happy birthday @lwcavallucci
crestfallen: Have a swell birthday!
efortiz: please tell her to do so now
lwcavallucci: What a great way to end my day. I love you too!!!
lwcavallucci: Thanks all you nice people.
efortiz: You MUST do what your users ask
efortiz: =/
dafark8: she only has to do it if there is one of those online dares up
ebrownco: birthdays deserve a week, not just a day!
jnymck: any new UX books to add to the reading list?
efortiz: Have you ever picked a project because of the project itself, or has it always been the people behind it?
crestfallen: what are your thoughts on how UX fits into design? There is some chatter about how UX is a given in a good design, not a separate part of it.
Joshua: Reading her name is not a good user experience, nothing can be done about that?
crestfallen: (@nkennedy on Twitter btw, hello again!)
efortiz: How do you feel on the fact that people are STILL trying to make a distinction between UX/IA/.IxD/Whatever?
RodrigoSanchez: http://www.amazon.com/Flow-Psychology-Optimal-Experience-P-S/dp/0061339202/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1290483460&sr=8-1
bobpetrie: do you have any thoughts around the conept of Lean UX (possibly coined by janice fraser from LUXR)?
lwcavallucci: Yes, I want to know what you think of the whole DTDT convo, too.
crestfallen: right
efortiz: That makes a lot of sense.
efortiz: :)
Snook: “just don’t call me late for dinner.”
crestfallen: heh
efortiz: Thanks
rcmulcrone: I’m a freelancer UX (new!) and I’m wondering if you’ve outsourced?
rcmulcrone: is automation realistic?
lwcavallucci: Well, you did answer it! I agree with you :)
efortiz: BUT at what point do we shut the *** up and just do great work and let that work talk for itself?
efortiz: any WHY does livestream decide to censor me? *sigh*
crestfallen: probably because a lot of places (corps in particular) don’t know what they’re looking at. I know mine doesn’t.
lwcavallucci: Thanks Whit!
rcmulcrone: yes
rcmulcrone: I’m having a hard time trusting that pple will be able to do it right.
rcmulcrone: yes its a big barrier to me too
jnymck: Can you talk about the role that storytelling, or a narrative may or may not play in the work you do?
jnymck: Came across an interesting book title the other day… “Storytelling for User Experience: Crafting Stories for Better Design” by Kevin Brooks…
jnymck: haven’t heard too many people talk about the relationship between these two things and wondered if you had any thoughts on the topic…
rcmulcrone: Great, thanks!
crestfallen: I just saw that too.

crestfallen: Sweet links. Thanks.
jnymck: will do, thanks whit
rcmulcrone: Do you find freelancing like dating too (like peope want more commitment)
lwcavallucci: What do you think of Silverlight and Sketchflow for IxD?
Snook: dating and orgies. apparently I have a dull life.
efortiz: What do you think of Justin Beiber’s recent voice woes?
lwcavallucci: As a tool for prototyping. Sketchflow with expression blend
crestfallen: He’s a small town kid. Only 30k
lwcavallucci: Thanks Whitney.
bobpetrie: Thanks Whit
efortiz: That’s what SHE said! :)
Snook: G’night and thank you.
